Important Update: Books Are GEMS Golf Tournament
After careful consideration, the Books Are GEMS Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to postpone our Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, October 12, 2026, to a future date due to circumstances beyond our control.
We sincerely appreciate everyone who planned to participate and support this special fundraising event, including our golfers, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and community partners.
All golf registration fees and sponsorship payments already received will be fully refunded.
Books Are GEMS will be contacting affected golfers and sponsors directly regarding their refunds.
We are especially grateful to those who stepped forward to support the tournament, donated prizes or items, helped promote the event, or volunteered their time. Your generosity and continued support of Books Are GEMS are deeply appreciated.
Although the tournament has been postponed, our work continues. Books Are GEMS remains committed to providing free books, literacy programs, educational resources, and learning opportunities for children, families, and teachers throughout our community.
We hope to bring the Books Are GEMS Golf Tournament back at a future date and will share additional information once plans are confirmed.
Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of Books Are GEMS and our mission to inspire children and empower families through literacy.

A New Series Begins This Week: Health Literacy for Families!
Books Are GEMS is excited to begin our new Health Literacy for Families series this week with an important first topic: Vaccinations.
Leading this week’s presentation will be our two new student interns, Yesenia Perez and Oscar Lira Loera, from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, El Paso Campus. Both are currently enrolled in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program, work at University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC), and have helped develop the topics that will be featured throughout our Health Literacy for Kids series.
Yesenia and Oscar have prepared a fun, family-friendly program designed to help children and parents better understand vaccinations. They will be reading:
Ira Gets a Flu Shot (Ira Children’s Series) by A. Jain
Children will also receive colorful activity pages to color and take home, while parents and caregivers will receive easy-to-understand vaccination facts and information in both English and Spanish.
All of these educational materials have been prepared by Yesenia and Oscar.
We encourage parents, grandparents, caregivers, and children to come learn together, ask questions, and take home helpful information they can continue discussing as a family.
Our regular Saturday Storytime will also feature two wonderful books:

and the El Paso Bar Foundation!
El Paso, TX -- Books Are Gems is proud to announce the launch of its newest initiative, Legal Literacy Storytime: Inspiring Kids with Justice, Rights, & Responsibility, made possible through a generous $6,500 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation and a $2,500 grant from the El Paso Bar Foundation!.
